Grading

The style of teaching by Sifu Derek Fung is the same as he learnt Wing Chun from Mr Ip Man in 1954 with some refinements from his over 60 years experience.

Beginnings start by learning:

  • Yee Jee Kim Yeung Ma (二字拑羊馬)
  • Sil Nim Tao (小念頭)
  • Darn Chi Sou (單黐手) – Single Sticky Hands
  • Surn Chi Sou (雙黐手) – Double Sticky Hands

The training system is open learning as both Junior and Senior students train together.

  • Junior students have the ability to train with their more experienced students, learn and adapt more quickly.
  • Senior students are able to refresh their skills by helping to train Junior students.

Once Sifu Derek Fung thinks a student is ready to progress to the next level or new challenges, the student will be introduced to Chum Kiu (尋橋), Bil Jee (鏢指) and Muk Yan Jong (木人樁) – Wooden Dummy Form.

The below Grading System is an indication only as the Traditional method used by Mr Ip Man and Wing Chun generations before, there was no belts, level or grading. In those days only if and when your Sifu considered you worthy or ready to progress to the next stage, were you taught more. Otherwise you would stay at the level you are !

The purpose of the below Grading System is to guide each student to mastering Wing Chun.
Learning is a slow process. You cannot expect to know how to run before you learn how to walk. Everyone has a different learning curve. Therefore, you should take it at your own pace and practice all the time.
This is how Sifu Derek Fung wants his students to learn Wing Chun !

There is no set time limit for attaining each Level. However a minimum of 4 years dedicated training (minimum 2-3 hrs a day, 6 days a week) may be achievable to learn the whole Wing System but a life time to master the essence of Wing Chun !
